Douglass in writing his narrative describes his slave self as Christian as well as his slave owners as Christians. Although they were both Christians, they each practiced their religion differently. Through every struggle Douglass faced, he kept his faith and believed that God would get him through. Slave owners, on the other hand, sold their slaves to get their money for church activities and also required the slaves to read the Bible, but did not allow the slaves to learn to read. Fredrick Douglass wrote his tale to tell the horrors of slavery and also to show that slaves who put their faith in God and were religious had the best outcome for them and that slave owners could not be Christians as they went against all that that God believed in.
