University City United Church Preschool is located in San Diego, California and serves children ages 2 to 5 who are toilet trained. I chose to make my observation with this preschool, because my mother has been teaching at this school since 1992. I attended this preschool when I was young, along with a multitude of my friends and families that I know. UCUC Preschool is NAEYC accredited and is highly regarded within the community. Environment: I arrived at the nursery on October 7 at 10:00 am. I stopped in the parking lot shared with the church. The school is located in a residential area surrounded by many houses. Once parked in the lot, I walk down a wide walkway to enter the preschool. The parking lot doors remain closed during school hours. Once I enter, I see a large room with several centers and areas to play. Directly in front of me are two small tables where the children can sit and eat a snack. They are child-sized, as are the chairs. Each table can accommodate 15 children and 1 adult. Behind that is the kitchen, which has a door and bar level area so it's not completely blocked off, but kids can't get into the kitchen. The next door leads to the director's office and secretary. Children come into the director's office if they need to be removed from serious situations and need to calm down away from other children. This typically only occurs in a few circumstances where children cannot calm themselves down. All around the large room the walls are filled with cubicles for each child. They are given space for school backpacks, jackets, art and craft projects, and anything else they need to put away. Each child has a name tag on their locker, so they know how to… middle of paper… the kids in the class. When she simply motions for them to help her clean his balls, the kids, for the most part, are responsive and understanding of what she wants and are willing to comply. They want praise and respect for her, which is evident in the common use of the phrase "look at me" and "look at me". Children are sincerely interested in charming the teacher and other children. They want to be admired and applauded. Observing the children during the few hours spent at the center was very informative and allowed me to see the children's interactions and play in a much more scientific study of development. Children at this stage are very exploratory of their surroundings and truly take in the entire environment. I am honored to have been able to observe such a fun and loving classroom and center and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity.
