Although the children grew up in different environments, the developmental stages they went through were mostly the same. Whether it was an environment not suitable for anyone's life, as depicted by Ponijao's family, or a well-kept house, as depicted by Hattie's family, the stages of development were pretty much the same. Each child used their senses to gain information about the world around them. The main difference in the development of these four children was the environment in which they grew up. For example, Hattie's parents constantly tried to teach their child new and educational things. His parents always read his books. In one book, he learned to imitate the sounds and movements that an elephant makes. Because of Ponijao's environment, it was extremely difficult to learn the kinds of things Hattie was learning. In his environment he didn't even have books or toys that could deepen his knowledge. His family lived in poverty. In the movie Babies, many theories and concepts were conveyed by the four different families. It showed the stage of development a child is in when he or she is less than a year old. The film demonstrated that a person can be raised in an American city or a third world country and still go through the same developmental stages as any child
