The death toll in Pontiac's War was 2,650, both British and Native Americans. The Pontiac Rebellion was a rebellion that occurred in 1763 when the Ottawa, Ojibwa, Shawnee, Miami, Huron, Seneca, and Potawatomi tribes united under the leadership of Pontiac, the chief of the Ottawa tribe, and launched attacks against the English around their area . They captured three major British forts including Fort Pitt and Fort Detroit. Pontiac's War influenced the American Revolution. Below are the main ideas: causes, what happened, short and long term effects, if it hadn't happened, and the leaders of Pontiac's war. One of the causes of Pontiac's War was that the French had lost the French and Indian War to the English. The French were allies of the Native Americans and treated them with respect. They also gave away gunpowder, firearms, animal skins, furs, and jewelry to the Native Americans. Britain wasn't so nice. They invaded Native American land without asking; they didn't exchange gifts because they thought it was blackmail and treated them with disrespect. The English had even enacted a law that no white man could cross the western side of the Appalachian Mountains without permission. However, this did not stop the English from crossing the Appalachian Mountains. This angered Chief Pontiac as he thought they were a threat to daily life. He then gathered the Ottawa, Ojibwa, Shawnee, Miami, Huron, Seneca, and Potawatomi tribes to attack local British settlements and forts. There are two main things that happened in Pontiac's Rebellion. They were at war and the Proclamation of 1763 was passed. The goal of the Native Americans was to drive all the English from the western side of the Appalachian Mountains. ...... middle of paper ...... they feared they would "interfere with our daily lives." Chief Pontiac brought together many tribes for a common cause which was to drive out all the British settlers in the area west of the Appalachian Mountains. Chief Pontiac was a rebel, a great intertribal leader, resilient, courageous, helpful, bold and daring. Jeffrey Amherst was the commander who cut off the gifts intended for the Native Americans, who relied so heavily on them. He also conquered Canada for Great Britain in 1758 during the French and Indian War. Amherst was courageous, believed in harsh punishments, and was bold about his ideas. In the end the Native Americans did not drive out the English but helped the Americans start the American Revolution. An interesting fact is that during the attempt to capture Fort Michilimackinac the Sauks and Ojibwa used a game of stickball to distract the British troops from the fort..
