In contrast to chain of command concerns, there is the idea of maintaining an open door policy. Often, those in a chain of command are able to manage various elements more adequately than those in higher positions. Overriding a command post to address an issue higher up often causes the issue to trickle down to the person being bypassed and lends itself to the development of negative feelings. Furthermore, applying the chain of command type of organization means that the concept of teamwork may not be fully embraced. Chain of command organizations appear to be oriented to generate competition among others and to focus on the upward mobility of the self rather than seeing others rise to the top together ( Pinchot & Pinchot, 2002 ). Leaders need to shift from being someone who is authoritative and saves the day to someone who leads by example and wants to succeed as a team. Communication up the chain of command is important when those in leadership positions believe it is more important than the mission. However, if the chain of command is so high up the scale of importance, then the students are not really first and this is something that needs to be
