A reflection on life: continued Sometimes life can be a little hectic, things can become entirely too difficult and there will be people who may want to put others down or see they fall. Gwendolyn Brooks' poem, "An Address to the Young," is a refreshing reminder to stop worrying so much about negative people and stop stressing about the future. He encourages his readers to take life as it comes and live in the present time. We could all use this type of positivity that Brooks seems to encourage his readers to express throughout his poetry. The message of this poem was clearly evident and certainly made an inspiring statement for all young adults (and even regular adults) who need to hear these wise words of wisdom. You are too young to be stressed; Trust me when I say everything will be fine. This specific poem initially struck me because I am young and the title said “An Address to the Young.” Young people seem to be the intended audience here, but after reading the poem I realized that it could be a poem for anyone who needs a reminder to live in the present time or to get back in line. Personally, I tend to overthink a lot of insignificant things. On the part of young adults, overanalysis and panic. This phrase means that even though you may be worried about the trials and tribulations that tomorrow may hold, or perhaps regret the mistakes you made in the days gone by; life will go on anyway. The sun will always rise and set. Line 8 follows by confirming that sense of reassurance with the simple line: “You will be right.” The assonance, the rhyming words, “night” and “right” unite these lines. Yes, everything will be fine and everything will work out in the end. Sometimes a simple line like this may be needed to get you back under control. A little is enough
