John Smith was born in 1579 or 1580 in Lincolnshire, England. This happened so far back in time that it makes it difficult for historians to recover medical records for people. After being apprenticed to a tradesman, Smith had decided he wanted to make a living in combat and joined the English army overseas. Smith had proven to be very successful in the army and joined a campaign against Henry IV, he also went against the Turks in Hungary. When Smith was in Hungary he was captured and enslaved. He was sent to serve a kind-hearted mistress who did not want Smith as her slave, so she sent him to her brother, where he was forced to do farm work. He later killed the farmer who held him captive as a slave and had him returned to England. Smith then met Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, who was involved in organizing a colony sponsored by the Virginia Company of London that would be sent to America.
