The way of being at the bedside is based on communication between the doctor and the patient. “ For professionals, the ability to listen to patients and explain things to them in an easily understandable way is particularly important. Good communication skills are one of the many attributes that a doctor needs.”(1447), According to “The doctor-patient relationship and its historical context”, there are three fundamental models for the doctor-patient relationship: Activity-Passivity, Orientation -Cooperation. and mutual participation. These three stages also correspond to age or mental capacity. In an Activity-Passivity relationship, the doctor acts on the patient and, in turn, the patient is unable to respond to or intercept the doctor's actions. This model is used with infants and people suffering from coma, delirium, or trauma. The Guidance-Cooperation model occurs when the doctor tells the patient what to do and the patient obeys, as seen in children and adolescents. Finally, in the Mutual Participation relationship, the doctor helps the patient to help himself. This is similar to a partnership, which occurs between two adults.
