Fifteen cubits upward the waters prevailed; and the mountains were covered” (Genesis 7:19-20). Except for creation, the flood of Noah's day is the most extraordinary event this world has ever known. The Bible describes this event in detail; telling when it started and ended, how long it lasted and why it happened. (Gen. 7:11-24) And it is mentioned many times in the Bible. The Lord himself mentioned it. (Matthew 24:38-39) Fifteen hundred years after the flood, Peter said, “Scoffers will come in the last days, walking in their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as from the beginning of creation. For they willfully ignore this, that by the Word of God the heavens were from ancient times, and the earth was out of the water and in the water; so that the world that was then was drowned in water and perished” (2 Peter 3:3-7). Peter also indicated that it was a worldwide event. (II Peter 3:5-7) He said, “The world that then was,” which “being flooded with water, perished.” He described the “world” as a land compacted out of water and in the midst of water; therefore, this could include none other than the entire world. He then draws a parallel between the flood and the destruction of the world. This parallel has no value
