The narrative film I choose to analyze for this assignment is If I Stay (2014; Director: RJ Cutler). This movie is about a high school cellist, Mia Hall, who gets into a car accident that leaves her in a coma. The story unfolds with Mia realizing that she is having an out-of-body experience and must make the difficult decision to return to a life that will never be the same again. Over the course of the film we move between the present moment with Mia in a coma, viewing everything from her out-of-body experience and the flashbacks before the accident in which Mia narrates several segments. For the film screening, we see how Mia's parents' love of music passed on to her and she became a budding cellist with hopes of one day attending Juilliard. Her life in high school and the new relationship she began with Adam, her future boyfriend, are explained in Mia's narration. The director has created a great understanding of his character and when the attempt fails and security tries to remove Adam, a family friend resolves the situation and informs Adam that Teddy has just died. Mia runs through the halls in disbelief and starts screaming that she just wants it to end. At the same time he begins to see bright light and his body goes into cardiac arrest. After a flashback; we find Mia's grandfather sitting next to her. As she watches, he explains that he wants her to live, but realizes that with the death of her parents and brother she may not want to return. With his conversation concluded, subsequent scenes show family and friends saying goodbye. This part of the film clearly serves the action of the fall. One would expect the action of the fall to include no other tragedies. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, here comes the twist with Teddy. The director was able to show how all the defeat ultimately had an impact
