According to the World Report on Violence and Health (2000), the large number of deaths among children neglected, abused and abused by their parents in the age group between 0- 4 years (Camilo, Garrido & Calheiros, 2016). These younger children were also more likely to develop an attachment to their abuser, who was most likely their parents. Additionally, these parents exhibited unrealistic perceptions or biases regarding how their children behaved and/or interacted. According to Hershkoitz (2005), younger children lack the cognitive and linguistic abilities to understand and communicate with others about the abuse they have suffered ((Bottoms, Peter-Hagene, Epstein, Wiley, Reynolds & Rudnicki, 2016).
