Hester remains faithful to Dimmesdale whenever she is asked to reveal the name of her secret lover. She refuses to allow him to be punished the way she was punished. Hester is commanded to "[s]peak the name!" of her partner in sin as she is shamed on the gallows, but maintains her allegiance to Dimmesdale by exclaiming, "I will not speak!" (Hawthorne 64). Despite the pressure of countless eyes watching her, she prevails and keeps her lover's secret. Hester also protects the Dimmesdale name from Roger Chillingworth, her husband. Knowing that Chillingworth seeks revenge on his partner in sin, he refuses to speak his name. He wishes to ensure that Dimmesdale remains safe by refusing anyone who asks for his name. In addition to Dimmesdale, Hester also shows loyalty to her husband, Roger Chillingworth. She takes a vow from Chillingworth and guarantees that she will not announce that he is her husband. Hester promises Chillingworth "You have kept their lover's secret. Keep, likewise, mine!... Tell no human soul that you ever called me husband" (Hawthorne 71). He wishes to remain unknown until he is able to discover his secret lover. She remains faithful to the oath until she asks permission to break it and tell Dimmesdale the truth about Chillingworth.
