Genetic Perfection in GattacaTopic: "The world of Gattaca is all about genetic perfection, but it's the flawed Vincent who achieves the most"Discussed.Set in a world governed by genetic engineering, Andrew Niccol's film, Gattaca, portrays the dire consequences of such a society in "the not-too-distant future." Given a predetermined life as a "divine child" due to his parents' adherence to religious beliefs, Vincent Freeman is an individual who "refuses to play the hand he has been dealt." Vincent, although seemingly cursed with an imperfect genetic makeup, manages to overcome considerable odds to realize his dream of space travel. From the moment Vincent was conceived, he was born into a world where ridiculous restrictions had already been placed on him that prohibited him from pursuing his goals. Antonio, Vincent's father, was aware from the exact moment his "In-Valid" son was born that he did not have the necessary genetic traits, so he deemed Vincent not worthy enough to bestow his own name on. Throughout his childhood Vincent was constantly subjected to prejudicial ridicule by the so-called "Valida" upper caste. Incidents such as the symbolic closing of the metal gate in Vincent's face as he was denied entry to a nursery due to the fact that "insurance did not cover" his seemingly inferior status. Vincent was also subjected to taunts from his smug brother "Valido" Anton, especially during their "favorite game", chicken. Chicken was a grueling swimming race in which the two brothers frantically swam "towards the horizon" to see who would "get away" and swim back first. With constant insults such as "come coward", it is truly commendable that Vincent re... middle of paper... distant future". He is disadvantaged due to his parents' adherence to strong religious beliefs which leaves his conception vulnerable to the whims of random genetics. As a result, in a society where genetic engineering is increasingly normal rather than an exception, it seems that Vincent will always live in the shadow of genetically superior beings as he mingles with members of the world." Valid" despite his "Invalid" status, he manages to earn considerable respect and admiration thanks to his tenacity, even from people unaware of his status as a genetic impostor. Although Vincent is at the lower end of the genetic hierarchy, it is thanks to his fierce determination and his unquenchable desire that he is able to rise above his colleagues and achieve his dreams. It is these qualities that make the central protagonist of Niccol unique in the world of Gattaca.
