Our generation today faces many old and new influences that come from different places. Whether it's social media, TV, or what your coworkers do, the decisions you make every day can change. One decision that many teenagers decide to make is to undergo plastic surgery. Exactly why teenagers make this decision is left up to the individual, but with the increase in young people doing this on a daily basis, one should become aware of the causes and effects. The success rate of these surgeries is not always high and lives may be irreversibly changed because some teenagers make their decision based on what others think and ignoring their own senses. In this article I will examine the influence the media and peers have on adolescents to discuss their role in motivating them to want plastic surgery and why this life-changing decision should not be influenced by ideas instilled by third parties. The biggest, if not the biggest, influence that teens pay attention to is the media. Society itself has almost been brainwashed to follow current trends and base their lives on what they see and watch on television. For example, pop singer Rihanna can get a new tattoo anywhere on her body and once the public discovers this, there will be many teenagers who will try to imitate this tattoo or get something similar. This may seem like just human nature, but when the person is a celebrity; their actions are amplified and seen on a much larger scale. According to Pediatric Annals, “Children and adolescents see 25,000 to 40,000 advertisements per year on television alone. Combining this with billboards, Internet advertising, magazine/newspaper ads, and radio ads, young people are immersed in a commercial culture virtually from childhood (Children).
