When I immigrated to Canada, I was bullied because of my ethnicity, immigration status, and socioeconomic position. I was vulnerable to bullying and required multiple layers of protection, which were not provided by the school. Schools should have a duty to provide and promote a safe and inclusive learning environment, free from discrimination. I didn't see school as a safe space. Minority students have an initial disadvantage, which hinders their success. Schools should provide “therapeutic” spaces where students can go to work despite the trauma resulting from harassment and discrimination; “receive the affirmation provided by support groups and come to know and accept who they are by learning about their differences” (Kumashiro, 2002, p. 35). Support programs and other resources simply didn't exist. My parents often perceive school as a safe haven, offering safe spaces, especially for students targeted by these forms of neglect
