The link between the miller and the story he tells is rather close; the story is truly a reflection of the character telling it. We will try to demonstrate this by examining the genre of the story, the way it is told and its meaning. Miller's tale is a fabliau, a genre best defined as "a dirty story told with wit and timeliness"; the story itself is about "old age, youth, carpentry and betrayal". A character who tells such a story can immediately be classified as a member of a low social class and as having a vulgar sense of humor, but not lacking in intelligence.
