Topic > The use of profiling to fight terrorism - 1367

Profiling by the Israeli security forces is a very important factor when it comes to fighting terrorism. Profiling allows you to group and identify certain types of people with similar characteristics to help understand why certain people commit different crimes. Because a terrorist's profile has changed over time, Israel now uses a type of predictive profiling. Instead of examining the crime after it has already been committed to profile the criminal, Israel uses predictive profiling to determine everyone's suspicion and threat before any criminal activity can occur. Although the United States has learned many things from Israel regarding the fight against terrorism, the use of profiling, constant searches, and the secure fencing of its borders are not concepts that many Americans would willingly adopt. Privacy is extremely important to most Americans and the idea of “big brother” would not satisfy the majority. The use of profiling as an investigative technique has been used for many years. Profiling is an important tool used in the field of criminal justice and criminology to better understand the behavior, personality characteristics and certain types of criminals. Using characteristics such as religion, race, and gender has always been frowned upon, but is sometimes necessary to better classify certain types of crimes and offenders. The three main objectives of profiling are to provide a social and psychological assessment of the offender, to provide a psychological assessment of the belongings in the offender's possession, and to provide tips and strategies for interviewing once caught. (Oconnor, 2011) By achieving each of these objectives when profiling different offenders, the links between certain characteristics of the offering… at the heart of the paper… archiving is a great tool for determining threats, not it's something I think Americans would take well to it too. The citizens of the United States want to feel protected, but I believe most are too concerned about themselves to allow the government to invade their right to privacy and right against unlawful searches to care about the greater good of the country.
