Humans are terrified of death. The creature was walking in the woods when he saw a girl running near a river when he lost his balance and fell. “I rushed out of my hiding place and, with extreme difficulty due to the force of the current, rescued her, and dragged her to shore” (115). At this moment his empathetic side took over. This is a human trait. He could have easily decided to let her drown if he wasn't human, but he decided not to because he has feelings like everyone else. Another reason he might have let her drown is because the other humans treated him badly. They look at him and think that just because he looks different he doesn't look like them. Life can be unfair, and what makes someone human is how they react after a dehumanizing or tragic event. Life is about learning that we are all human and we all make mistakes. The creature challenges many social boundaries because it wants to grow as a human being. Many human beings will not want to grow up when they feel excluded. It's easy to say my life sucks and ask for mercy. The creature does not do this because it wants to be seen as human and feel loved. Through the monster's great quality of empathy, it has developed knowledge of language, affections and emotions.
