Female characters in The Ivory Swing and Tiger in the Tiger DenWith "beautifully executed visuals," Janette Turner Hospital creates four vibrant characters women in his two novels. The four characters are Juliet and Yashoda in The Ivory Swing and Elizabeth and Emily in The Tiger in the Tiger Pit. Each of these aspects is invested with profound awareness by Turner Hospital. From Janette Turner Hospital's perspective, women are immensely uncertain. They are never sure what they want. However, when it comes to dealing with external conflicts, they are very strong-willed. On the other hand, it also indicates that motherly love is strong. Women passionately believe in the importance of family. As the stories follow, these female personalities are gradually demonstrated. Before leaving for India, Juliet had trouble deciding whether to stay with her professor husband, David, or move to Montreal to be with her ex-lover Jeremy. Uncertain as usual, all Juliet wants is to "keep balance". He could never find the courage to face new circumstances. His mind is never steady enough to challenge the present state. Then he makes his choice in the order of morality. She stays with her husband and leaves with him for India. It is more likely that fate marked Juliet's future. She is married to Dave on her own accord. Therefore, she does what a good wife should do.1. Reviewed in: Booklist v.79 p.994 1 April 19832. "The Ivory Swing" p.18In Kerala, where David is on sabbatical to study primitive Indian culture, the couple encounters... middle of paper... . ..in this situation, women would suffer to protect their children. Motherly love is always shown first. In addition to the above, Tuner Hospital also implies that women passionately believe in family. Both the books The Ivory Swing and The Tiger in the Tiger Pit are sensitively written. Yet the latter is not as successful as the former. “50th wedding anniversaries and family reunions of any kind should be left to the greeting card makers.”12.
