Many people suffer from illnesses directly related to the American diet. It is estimated that approximately 61% of Americans are considered overweight, and approximately one-third of these are currently obese (cdc.gov). Across the country, the obesity epidemic has affected every demographic of the population. According to the Center of Disease Control, approximately 248,000 Americans die prematurely due to obesity each year. The Center also says that today many more people are dying prematurely from obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer. An even more disturbing statistic is that the percentage of obese children and adolescents has doubled in the last twenty years (cdc.gov). To understand why obesity is on the rise in America, you need to take into consideration the average Americans' diet. Compared to other countries, the American diet is one of, if not the worst in terms of nutrition (Young 93). The unhealthy American diet is an eating habit strongly associated with fast food, processed foods, soft drinks, and large portions, which explains why it must change to save our country. Over the past 50 years, American diets have gone from leisurely, family-cooked meals that were usually prepared at home, using natural ingredients, to today's fast foods that are consumed on the run with little attention to the nutrition of the contents; at least a quarter of Americans eat fast food every day (Harper 35). Eating out several times a week is an important part of the routine of most Americans (Schlosser).
