Therapy is very active and usually includes homework assignments, feedback, and direction from the therapist. Once perceptions are identified, clients are directed towards alternative ways of thinking which, in theory, will lead to reduced gambling or improved control over gambling. One of the most common exercises is to describe risky life situations that could trigger a relapse. Once identified, the therapist and client will create a problem solving approach for how to avoid or manage that situation. Restricting access to money and/or increasing the level of difficulty in gambling are techniques used in behavioral therapy. Fong's (2005) study found the following: “Recovering gamblers are encouraged to unsubscribe from casino mailing lists, meet with a financial planner, cancel all credit cards, and relinquish control of the money to another person. Each behavioral intervention is designed to increase the difficulty of gaining access to money to gamble.” This method would have been helpful to Mike because Mike always had access to money hidden in the house.
