The Effects of Sports Teams and Stadiums on CitiesAnd if a tax increase came to a city because of a sports team, would that be okay? Obviously not, right? Well, consider being told as a taxpayer and being told it will help the city's economy to build a stadium. However, a tax increase is never welcome, and big companies are selling extraordinary economic growth, and cannot deliver on the promise. Area political leaders, local community leaders as well as owners of professional sports franchises sometimes argue that a sports stadium and professional teams are vital sources of positive economic growth in urban areas. Even though most stadiums and franchises supposedly donate a lot of money to create new jobs and also provide the justification for millions of dollars ranging from hundreds to public subsidies for the construction of an assortment of new professional sports teams in the United States over the past ten years. Despite the outrage, some numbers crunchers have found no evidence of a positive economic impact of professional sports teams and facilities on urban economies. “It's a zero-sum game,” Rolnick said. “In fact, it can be a negative-sum game.” First and foremost, stadiums and teams always seem to be a big contender for positive economic development jobs focused on helping a city's economic growth.
