Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks Setting The setting of this book that I liked the most was the scene where Alice and her friend Chris run away to San Francisco to start a new life. On page 56 Alice and Chris sneak away in the middle of the night, Alice doesn't write down an appointment, however she tells us that the bus she is taking is at 4.30am. I think I like this part because they both want to leave and start a new life, and when someone is in a bad place like themselves, I think it's okay that they can start a new life. I also like this setting because even though the apartment is bad, they have almost no money and no family, they still seem to stay there with their heads held high. Eventually they become a little more successful, they get jobs, money, meet people and everything seems to go very well for them. However in life nothing is ever perfect and there will always be someone or something that will ruin everything, and the so called "friend" has really messed things up for both mature girls. This mess brought the girls full circle, and back to where they lived, back home with their families. Conflict Self Self - The conflict I chose is when Alice thinks she is pregnant. This is definitely a conflict for her. On August 6, when Alice was only 15, she got high and lost her virginity to Bill (a boy she had only recently met). All she could talk about for a long time was "what if I'm pregnant?" "I certainly couldn't handle having to leave school like he had to leave school last year. The kids have been talking about it for weeks." Alice is obviously very concerned about her appearance, and when she believes she is pregnant it creates a huge conflict for herself. Not only does he worry, but he also starts taking sleeping pills and tranquilizers to sleep and forget what happened. CharacterCharacter: The conflict I chose between 2 characters was Richie (Alice's boyfriend) and Ted (Chris' boyfriend). I consider this a conflict because if Alice and Chris had not walked in on the two boys making love, then Alice and Chris would never have escaped from
