Elder abuse and neglect have been recognized as a growing problem in the United States, and this trend is expected to increase unless adequate measures are taken to mitigate the abuse among the elderly. Education and provision of proper training to health workers and caregivers in the proper care and treatment of our senior citizens. Healthcare professionals, especially emergency medicine doctors and nurses, must take the lead in this area. Programs must be organized in health facilities to facilitate the training of health workers. Studies show that abusers appear to be family members and caregivers of the elderly. The goals of elder abuse are not to prevent but to mitigate and include improving the quality of life, preventing family breakdown, and keeping older adults in their homes for as long as possible if that is their desire. As adults age, they may become more physically frail, not see or hear as well as they used to, and develop cognitive problems such as dementia. As a result, they become increasingly vulnerable to abuse and neglect. Elder Abuse as a Social Problem Elder abuse is a multifaceted and pervasive public health problem that includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, financial exploitation, and neglect (caregiver neglect and self-neglect). It is estimated that only a fraction of elder abuse cases actually come to the attention of Adult Protective Services (APS) (Dong, Chen, 2013).
