The Handmaid's TaleThe Handmaid's Tale is a gripping novel about one woman's struggle through a revolution of extremism. In this society characterized by a severe military government, its position is that of slavery where it is used for reproduction. He is under constant surveillance and any mistake he makes can result in death. We follow her along this path as she meets different characters, goes through daring situations, and reflects on her previous life. The most amazing thing about the novel is seeing all the human emotions and characters adapt in the most inhuman moments. Looking at all the different aspects of fear, apathy and hope, the book shows how survival in such bleak times can still be possible. After learning of the woman's circumstances, I can't help but think about how I could never have endured under such unbearable conditions. , no one could. Especially since she's from the United States, with a family and a normal life of freedom, having all of that only to have it taken away makes the situation even more terrible. But what Atwood portrays so well is what goes through her mind, along with what she believes others think. I can't help but draw parallels between this situation and that of Holocaust survivors when I think about how someone can endure so much. The daily emotion represented by the woman is that of trying to remain impassive. Throughout the book he repeatedly says of many things that "I try not to think about it." This seems to be the only way to avoid killing yourself in such deprivation than before. However, in such difficult times, this task seems easier said than done. The woman focuses on details and surroundings rather than emotions to pass the time; we see her step by step transforming into a robot for most of the day. She often thinks about her husband and her son, but whenever the feelings start to become unbearable she turns them off as if she had a switch. Many times, when he is in flashbacks, he seems to do so without any real emotion. Think about how things were meant to pass the time instead of feeling something in certain cases.
