The contrast between the Court of Miracles and Notre-Dame"No one had yet noticed, in the gallery of the royal statues..., a strange specter which until then had observed everything that happened... Suddenly, at the moment when the executioner's two assistants were preparing to carry out the execution,... he approached the two sub-executioners, threw them to the ground, took the gypsy away and threw himself at one rushed into the church, raised the girl above his head and shouted in a formidable voice: "Sanctuary!" "Notre-Dame, an intimidating building in the heart of 15th-century Paris, has many different faces for those who reside in and near Esso. Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer, lives in the church after being adopted by the archdeacon Claude Frollo, when the hunchback was a child. The empathetic monster lives in complete servitude to Frollo, his savior, and spends his days ringing his beloved bells which repay his altruism by making him deaf. The expert archdeacon, Claude Frollo, also resides within the walls of Notre-Dame and, after filling his head with every knowledge he can find, begins to dedicate his life to alchemy. The two men, in addition to their relationship and common habitat, have another element in common. They both have fallen in love with La Esmeralda, a compassionate orphaned gypsy girl who earns a living on the streets with her fluid dancing and her funny pranks with her goat and her best friend, Djali, performs. Quasimodo's love is pure and fresh and he lives in awe of La Esmeralda after she offers him a drink when the townspeople deny him this request while he is tortured as punishment for the single crime of being deaf and not understanding the judge . Frollo... he's half paper... his walls aren't as strong as the building. The archdeacon, Claude Frollo, a holy man, gives in to the sin of the flesh and tries to rape and kill La Esmeralda. Phoebus, a man who worships God within his walls, alone could save La Esmeralda's life, but chooses not to due to his own vanity. The entire city turns a blind eye to the truth and sentences an innocent girl to death without any evidence, just because she is different from them. The structures of the Court of Miracles and Notre-Dame Cathedral are very different structures. Notre-Dame is a symbol of strength and God while the Court of Miracles represents the filth of the Earth. Yet, as Hugo's theme suggests, one cannot judge places, nor men, by their appearances and the Court of Miracles turns out to be the stronghold, while Notre-Dame houses the iniquity of the city..
