GenderismsWhen you first meet someone, the first thing you notice is their gender and race. Genderisim are gender themes embedded in social stereotypes about women that reinforce social stereotypes about women and men. In everyday life, gender is assigned gender roles that provide social explanations regarding appropriate behavior for men and women. Goffman's gender theory portrays women as feminists by making them vulnerable by placing them in submissive positions in magazines. In the videos “Beyond Killing Us Softly” and “Still Killing Us Softly” Goffman's theories come into play by showing us that women are thin, innocent, young and should be predominantly white just as women should be valued not for who they are. do, but for what they seem. While men are always portrayed in dominant, masculine positions and are expected to be tough and powerful without showing any emotion. Functional ranking provides women and men with positional rankings through which our society stereotypes what gender they are to be. In status localization, men are described as operating in the world in positions of authority, while women are described as operating in service. Our society has a stereotype that men can be firefighters or police officers and that women should stay home and take care of children or be a waitress bringing food to someone and be out of danger. Regarding the appearance/achievement aspect in our society, men are described as active while women are objects to be looked at. In the videos “Beyond Killing Us Softly” and “Still Killing Us Softly” we really saw the reality of stereotypes in our society by showing us that women should be role models or be in service to men, and that men should be in corporate offices in positions of power for our society. Basically what our world is telling us is that men should be the providers and women should nurture based on physical position which makes our world biased towards men and contemptuous of women. By analyzing the magazines, videos “Beyond Killing Us “Softly and Killing Us Softly” Goffman's theories come into play which socially stereotype women as vulnerable, passive and innocent which are still very relevant in our society today. the ad shows a man with his arms between the legs of two women. The women are depicted only showing their bottoms from the shoulders down, and both wear revealing clothing to show off their bare legs.
