Kelly Going lives in Beacon, New York. After graduation he held numerous jobs. KL Going enjoys traveling and has lived in Maine, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and New York. Fat Kid Rules the World is his first novel. She said the idea for the book came to her while she was on the subway in New York. The novel came together quickly, which she said was because she began writing shortly before September 11, 2001. She said she may have used writing as an escape from what was happening in the world around her . Part of the book was inspired by the life and music of Kurt Cobain. Going had just gotten into vintage punk music and wanted to express her interests through the book. The character in his book that was modeled after Kurt Cobain was Curt. KL Going struggles with self-doubt; this is shown through the character Troy. Although she is very petite, her feelings of self-consciousness showed her "fat boy" character, Troy. Kelly Going has just completed a new book called The Liberation of Gabriel King. The book is for children aged seven to twelve. It is scheduled for release in the summer of 2005. He is currently working on another novel for teenagers. Fat Kid Rules the World, written by KL Going, is the story of two boys brought together by fate. Troy, a 300-pound suicidal outcast, and Curt, a skinny high school dropout who's a punk rock guitar genius. They both live in New York City, but in two totally different worlds. Troy lives on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and Curt sometimes lives in the projects, other times in the subway or anywhere else he can sleep. The two deal with very different issues, but without even knowing it, they help each other throughout the book. Curt helping Troy is more obvious than Troy helping Curt solve his problems, until the end of the book. When Curt unintentionally saves Troy's life, the two quickly become best friends. Curt wants Troy to form a band with him.
