Established as an act of compromise between patricians and plebeians after a military revolt, the Plebeian Council had the power to pass laws and deal with civil disputes until Sulla, as dictator, established permanent courts in the 1st century BCE The assembly met at the request of and under the supervision of a tribune, an elected magistrate who served for one year and was responsible for monitoring judicial decisions made by the assembly. The Plebeian Assembly would eventually become the favored legislative body of the Roman Republic.
