For the past two decades the idea of gay marriage has been a hotly debated topic around the world. On both sides there are people fighting for and against this right that is slowly being adopted in many places like the United States. Over time, the issue of same-sex marriage has been contested for various reasons. Devoe outlines this reasoning in an article titled “Same-Sex Marriage Is Not About Freedom,” which states that “gay marriage is the 'decisive blow' to individual freedom because it destroys the last communal limit: marriage traditional” (Devine). Despite people's disapproval of gay marriage, there are others who are strongly in favor of it. Same-sex marriages are capable of benefiting society in many ways, such as political, economic, and even social. Society's general view on same-sex marriage has socially evolved over time from negative reasons to positive outcomes. Many people were against the idea of gay marriage due to religious beliefs and traditional values established long before. While there are those who oppose gay marriage rights who now accept the idea of equality among their people, Wade notes research in an article that states, "14% of Americans say in the past they opposed same-sex marriage, but now they support it.” As for traditional family views, same-sex marriages encourage strong family values and acceptance they are the same sex, their perspective most likely would be less judgmental than that of those who are not homosexual. Marriage between people of the same sex presents no harm to society or to anyone in particular. Marriage is a right chosen between two people and should not be limited to who those two are people. “Marriage is a commitment that says, 'I love you so much that I want to live the rest of my life with you'.
