Topic > The effects of technology on children and teenagers

Young children at the table, in the park, at the mall are constantly seen playing with their guardians' phones, iPads or iPods, generally without interacting with the world around them surrounds. In today's society this is extremely normal because we have created a world based on the constant need for technology. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that young children eliminate technology use for children younger than two years of age and minimize technology use for children two years of age and older (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2015 ). By minimizing screen time, children will be able to develop positively socially and emotionally. Many theorists have spent years focusing on children's development and the aspects that shape how a child behaves socially. Jean Piaget believed that children's minds developed in stages, while Lev Vygotsky theorized that children developed through a sociocultural manner. Both theories allow today's researchers and psychologists to see the negative effects of technology. Research studies such as the Friendship Quality Study and the Secure Attachment Studies confirm how screen time can influence a child's development in many different ways. The use of electronics should be reduced considerably to create a lifestyle in which a child can grow, interact and build lifelong skills. One of the best-known psychologists who studied child development was Jean Piaget. He divided child development into four phases: the sensorimotor phase, the preoperational reasoning phase, the concrete operational reasoning phase, and the formal operational reasoning phase (Callanan, lecture, October 22, 2015). Each stage is extremely important in one's life, especially the sensorimotor and pre...... middle of paper ...... They are unable to interact with others and see the world as older generations did. Now this isn't said about all electronics, many times it involves the culture and atmosphere in which the child grows up. Great psychologists and theorists, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky explained how the first years of a child's life are extremely important and fundamental for correct development. Studies like Stranger Situation and Friendship Quality allow us to see that as humans we need human interaction and must create connections with others to succeed in life. Children need to be able to learn basic skills such as holding a conversation or being kind to another human being, this simply cannot be done if the child stares at a screen all day. The AAP has a sound perspective on technology-related recommendations and should be recommended to all parents everywhere.
