Life is a complicated process. It is filled with many things that make it interesting but at the same time very boring. Life is what you make it and for many it is something we all strive for. In the story, The Space Between, the author takes full advantage of the premise as there is rarely a dull moment, like in life. The book is filled with many literary devices that work well with the plot and dialogue. These include; metaphors, similes, irony, personification and much more. We follow a young man who is looking for his way in the world. He only has one week to change his life for the better. But he will face many obstacles along the way that will take readers on a surprising and entertaining journey. The main character of the story is a seventeen (out of eighteen) year old Canadian boy named Jace. Early on we see Jace's first big problem: he's almost eighteen and still a virgin. Luckily for Jace, he's going to a Mexican resort where he, his mother, his aunt, and his younger brother will stay for a week as part of a vacation, giving Jace a chance to solve his problem. Therefore, most of the story takes place in and around the Mexican resort: the Mayan Empress Resort Hotel. The resort is a magnificent place for relaxation, with numerous beaches, ruins, restaurants, tourist attractions, entertainment venues and natural wonders. Being from Halifax, Nova Scotia, February is a cold time of year for most, but thanks to his wealthy Uncle Stavros, Jace can take a break from his daily struggles. But since he comes from a dark past and a distant relationship with his family, settling down and relaxing seems unlikely for Jace Antonakos. Jace has a lot to think about as he is the middle child of three boys. Unfortunately for Jace, he receives minimal attention because he has a "perfect" older brother, Stefan, and a younger brother with childhood disintegrative disorder.
