By remaining rationally detached I could have better maintained control by not taking the negative comments so personally. By taking this more into consideration during the conversation I could have quickly defused the situation with the client and encouraged positive rational behavior in response. Another unhelpful behavior I could have used would have been to use positive self-talk. As a counselor you need to remind yourself that you are not the target of an outburst or negative situation or the cause of the behavior. Simply doubting yourself in these situations can cause an unwanted response from the client, but telling yourself that I know what to do or say will instead lead to a more productive response and help keep the situation calm. Although I used “I statements,” I could have used this strategy more in the role-playing game. Using statements starting with “I” in this crisis role could have been more helpful in providing direction by being clear about what will happen and what will be asked of my client. Statements such as “I will explain next steps” could also have provided clear support and functioned as an effective communication tool between me and the client to help them recognize and understand what was happening or will happen
