There is an invasion in the United States, an invasion of illegal aliens. These illegal immigrants are harming the American economy and jeopardizing the well-being and safety of all American citizens. The government is currently trying to pass legislation, called The DREAM Act, to provide amnesty to more than 13 million illegal immigrants. Amnesty cannot be granted to illegal immigrants! There are several issues that come up when talking about the problems of illegal immigrants: financial ramifications, criminal issues, and of course, jobs. Supporters of the DREAM Act will say that providing amnesty to illegal immigrants will help the economy, but this is false, amnesty will only further harm the economy and honest American citizens. According to Jack Martin and Eric A. Ruark, authors of “The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers,” illegal immigrants cost U.S. taxpayers more than $113 billion annually (Martin & Ruark, 2010). Broken down, that means more than $29 billion at the federal level and $84 billion at the state and local levels. More than $52 billion of state and local costs go to the education of children of illegal immigrants, and that includes the additional cost of special classes to teach them English as a second language. If the so-called DREAM Act passes, it will only increase pressure on our already struggling economy. Most illegal immigrants are poor, which means that over 57% participate in some type of welfare program, many more than one (illegalimmigrationstatistics.org). If they receive full citizen status, as the DREAM law proposes, they will get all the benefits, more than they already receive, and will be able to draw on the social security pension, when it is well known that the social security system is already on brink of collapse. Additionally, most illegal immigrants don't pay taxes, and most who do get refunds and tax credits
