John F. Kennedy once said, “Mankind must end war before war ends mankind.” It was said a few decades ago but the topic of war is current at all times. One might share Kennedy's point of view, while another might not. The most obvious example of different points of view and approaches on how to deal with conflicts concerns Western and Eastern civilizations. The Western approach focuses on physical aggression and achieving goals through power and coercion, while the Eastern approach is more philosophical, rational, and strategic. We see this method of approach in Sun Tzu's military treatise, “The Art of War”. Although he wrote a manual on how to defeat an enemy, Sun Tzu emphasized that much of success is based on the military's moral duty, which is cultivated by incentives, the example of leaders, and the ability to listen to one's soldiers. Sun Tzu believes that some type of reward is helpful in stimulating soldiers' commitment, dedication, and support for their rulers.
