After some time on the island he comes across a campfire that had been put out and now realizes that someone is also here on the island with him. Huck meets the other individual and learns that he is a slave named Jim. Jim says he ran away because he heard Mrs. Watson talking about selling him for $800 and sending him to New Orleans as a field worker in the Deep South, taking him away from his family. Huck immediately promises not to tell anyone that Jim has run away. He knows there's a risk that keeping a secret like that will be a big deal. Jim will go hunting and any white person who sees him will take him and prosecute him
