Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, in what is now the Czech Republic, on May 6, 1856. He was the firstborn in his family. He had two brothers and five sisters. When Sigmund was four years old his family moved to Vienna, where he lived the rest of his life. He didn't choose just any career, his choices were very limited because he was Jewish. In 1881 he obtained a medical degree from the University of Vienna, and the year after graduation he became engaged and married. From this marriage he had six children; of the six children he had, only one (the youngest was called Anna) became an illustrious psychoanalyst following his father. Sigmund began treating various psychological disorders; he became more of a scientist than a doctor. He was really influenced by the work of his Viennese friend and colleague Josef Breuer and their discoveries. In 1886 Freud opened his first neurologist practice in Vienna, Rathausstrasse 7. He began to formulate theories about the mind. Freud also published Studies on Hysteria with Josef Breuer in 1895. In 1902 he became a professor at the University of Vienna which he himself had attended. In 1908 he founded a psychoanalytic society in Vienna. In 1923 he was struck by cancer and underwent surgery, he continued his work and died in 1939. Sigmund Freud was a very intelligent man. He was a psychiatrist, he formulated many theories. Some of the main theories formulated by Sigmund Freud are: The Conscious and Unconscious Mind, The Id, the Ego and the Superego, The Life and Death Instincts, Psychosexual Development, Defense Mechanisms.
