Topic > Gender stereotypes are decreasing in today's society

In today's society, people create stereotypes to generalize certain groups; such as religion, personal beliefs or even discriminating against groups of people because of their race, sex or appearance. When the stereotype occurs between men and women, it is called gender stereotype. According to Beere (1990), gender stereotypes are described as “perceptions of people, objects, activities, or concepts based on relatively rigid, oversimplified, and overgeneralized beliefs or assumptions regarding such characteristics or males and females.” 221). It means that people have acquired some specific opinions of men and women; Gender stereotypes are emphasized by parents, cultures and media, such as animated films and advertising. However, these stereotypes can often be unfair, harmful, positive and negative to people because they rarely communicate accurate information about others. Therefore, when people automatically apply gender assumptions to others regardless of evidence to the contrary, they are perpetuating gender stereotypes (Gender Stereotypes, 2013 For example, in my Sex and Gender, I learned that men are not polite, aggressive, they tend to do better in math and science, and most lawyers, engineers, and doctors are men. I also learned that women are caring, emotional, take care of the home and children, and love pursuing careers in nursing and the arts. . Although, if males and females try to violate their expected gender stereotypes, they may face consequences, but these consequences are more prevalent for women Despite the strong gender stereotypes, I think as our world is advancing every day, the concept of gender stereotypes is gradu...... middle of paper ......hopes more women will enroll in flight school and help combat sexist attitudes. She said that women in male-dominated fields have been told that it's not for women, and that they can't do it, and she hopes that one day that mindset will change (Wells, 2014). Also, from my point of view, it has always been difficult for women to enter male-dominated professions and even if they successfully enter these professions, it is very difficult for them to adapt due to some negative gender stereotypes. Personally I think what Steacy did was very courageous, in the sense that he didn't let it slip; instead she took a stand and defended herself, gaining the support of many people. I think if every woman in Canada took a stand for unacceptable actions like Steacy did, I hope that our historically perceived concept of gender stereotyping will soon diminish.
