What Big Brother is really doingAccording to Google, Big Brother is "A person or organization that exercises total control over people's lives". Not only is Big Brother seen in George Orwell's novel 1984, but he is also seen everywhere in our everyday lives. Our modern form of Big Brother is our government system. In the way the United States is governed, with all the new technologies and advancements, we are never truly alone. Our every move is constantly watched. The difference between our modern Big Brother and the Big Brother we saw in 1984 is that our version wants to help keep us safe, not brainwash us into total power and control. In my opinion, the government of North Korea is currently the most similar to the government shown in Orwell's novel. Just like Oceania, North Korea is ruled by a cult-like dictatorship. Just like Big Brother in 1984, Kim Jung-un censors most of his citizens' information, punishes people who criticize his government, and constantly publicizes propaganda about the war and how North Korea is the best country. The citizens of North Korea have no choice but to believe the information their leaders tell them. North Korea's Big Brother (Kim Jung-un) is the last one to decide what is real and what is fake in his country. It's as if he is erasing a part of history by hiding so much information from his people and the outside world. I think all governments in every country have a handle on what is real and what is fake, each just to a different extent. Governments can control what their citizens believe by choosing what information they tell and show them. People tend to believe what their leaders tell them because we like to think that our leaders have our best interests in the middle of the paper… themselves. If the technology didn't exist, I don't know. I don't think "Big Brother" would even exist. The idea of Big Brother has only become extremely important in the last few decades and I think this is due to all our technological advances. Almost every place you go there are cameras that can see what you are doing at all times. Every email and every phone call can be monitored. All your locations and routes can be tracked if you have a smart device nearby. The government has the ability to turn on the cameras on your laptop and phone to see what you are doing. Some people see this as an invasion of privacy and then there is "Big Brother" who sees them as security precautions. In this situation, I think the NSA (National Security Agency) is the real Big Brother. NSA is the one who has all the power to carry out all these tasks by hacking all the electronic devices.
