Best Management Practices Demonstrating Communication Skills Demonstrating good communication skills is vital to the supervisory role, to be a leader you need to be able to lead effectively and this it starts with communication. First of all a supervisor must know what his personal communication style is, in fact he must know what form of communication works most effectively for him and it must be consistent. I believe that the most important aspect of demonstrating communication skills lies not so much in what is said but in the actions that follow. To be an effective communicator, a supervisor must have knowledge and must also back up and follow through with what he says. Communication is not just verbal but there are many ways to communicate effectively without using words, non-verbal communication is something that is different for every person. Ideas can be communicated effectively with a simple wave of the hand or a nod of the head. There is non-verbal communication outside of gestures, things like body language, eye contact, physical touch, and even tone of voice is a non-verbal aspect of communication. Many things can be communicated without even saying anything, a prime example of this is the stink eye, and by that I mean that look your mother gave you as a child that immediately let you know you were in trouble; the look that is almost worse than the punishment. Simple things like these are ways to demonstrate communication skills. Determining Effective Orientation and Training Methods Effective employee orientation and training begins with a clear understanding of an individual company's goals, philosophy, and a brief history of the organization. This will help employees understand rhyme and why things are done a certain way. To determine what the best practice is for orientation and training, job expectations need to be clearly delineated.
