“Sophocles suggests that while the gods may predetermine or influence human action, they do not necessarily define someone's character. People have a responsibility to discover who they are and who they belong to; they must therefore assume moral responsibility for their own lives” (Textbook; page 466). Sophocles was a very successful playwright during his lifetime. His work includes Oedipus Rex and Antigone. In his plays, he clearly illustrates the difference between appropriate and inappropriate ancient Greek culture and behavior. This behavior includes the difference between the roles of men and women. Men had all the power, and were the rulers/kings, where no one questioned their law, while women had no power roles, and it was highly inappropriate for them to question the law, and a man for that matter. Along with the behavior of people, Sophocles' works showed ancient Greek culture. The characters' strong faith and support of the Greek gods and goddesses really outlines their religion. In his play, Oedipus Rex, Oedipus is the protagonist and ruler of Thebes. He is confronted with the truth and mentally cannot handle it. While Creon may be the true tragic hero of Antigone, he is not the main focus. Antigone herself, the daughter of Oedipus, is the target of the play, displaying Greek, feminine, and inappropriate behavior. So, when a character acts on emotions, disaster occurs, but when a character acts accordingly and according to the rules of society, he is safe. The difference between Antigone and her sister, Oedipus blinded by the truth, and both of their actions, make them examples of how Sophocles shows his audience good manners. You can learn the importance of ancient Greek culture, from Antigone ( bo... middle of paper... together, you can see how similar they are. They both had major flaws, and there were reasons behind their actions. Each character goes against the morally correct ways of society Based on their actions, Sophocles teaches his audience many things. Antigone and Oedipus both show the readers and the audience the consequences of behaving immorally and against ancient Greek culture protagonists face the consequences of their actions, knowingly or not. The audience and readers are taught correct and improper ways to behave, from the rule of ancient Greece it is very important to follow the rules and be law-abiding citizens because otherwise there is. they were harsh punishments and executions, as seen in Oedipus Rex and Antigone So, in conclusion, Oedipus and Antigone display incorrect and inappropriate behavior, typical of their time.
