What do corn, soy and a Big Mac have in common? These products, along with many other foods, are some of the most common GMO-containing products sold today. Many people around the world go through the day without knowing the products they are eating. What are GMOs? GMOs or genetically modified organisms are living things such as microorganisms, plants or animals that are not found in nature. They are the product of genetic engineering, a scientific process that alters the biological composition of a species or combines genetic material from one species with that of another species. (DOC: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).) The reason companies use genetically modified products is because they have greater resistance against many things, such as diseases and attacks, which make it easier to grow them without being wiped out. The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). organisms in food production is a source of popular indignation. Most people consider this interference in the genetic code disgusting or dangerous. Considering that GMOs are present in a large amount of our foods, are they considered safe? Scientific evidence does not prove that GMOs are harmful, however there is also no evidence that they are completely safe. Anti-GMO groups believe that humans should not be exposed to organisms that may pose unknown risks. These unknown risks have pushed some countries to go the extra mile for their populations and refuse to engage in the genetically modified food industry. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan and all countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs.
