Topic > Compare and Contrast Jekyll and Sylvens - 1722

Many subtle battles between good and evil have been fought since the beginning of time. Whether it's wars between cultures or countries in real life, great battles in literature, or final showdowns in movies, conflict never ends. This fact is evident in the film The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon. As a group of heroes gathered to save the world, the Avengers obviously represent good. Loki and his army of aliens represent evil as they seek to conquer Earth. Throughout the film, the Avengers constantly battle Loki to maintain power on Earth. They meet Loki in a final battle against him and his alien army where they fight for control of the world. Following the story-driven pattern, the Avengers, Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Both authors similarly demonstrate the theme through their use of characterization to show the characters' transformation from good to evil. However, the novels differ in how while one character, that of Lucy, the change is involuntary, Doctor Jekyll makes the choice to change. Additionally, both Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde exemplify the theme through the use of conflict between the forces of good and evil. They contrast in the type of conflict they use. Furthermore, the theme is commonly expressed by both authors through the use of a character suffering from mental illness who shows vulnerability on the side of evil. However, characters differ based on who they are viewed as vulnerable to. Similar to the Avengers film, both Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde feature the theme of a constant battle between opposing sides of good and evil. Bram Stoker expresses the theme best through his novel Dracula. A natural battle between the opposing sides of good and evil has existed since the beginning of time, and it seems that as long as the Earth continues to spin, the battle will never end.
