However, our social structure is not a brick wall where individuals are trapped by social class. We are still able, through education and opportunity, to shape our lives and reach our full potential. Harlon L. Dalton emulates this possibility in his story about Horatio Alger, “neither Alger nor the myth suggests that we begin on equal terms. Nor does the myth necessarily require that we be given equal opportunities to succeed. Rather, Alger's point is that each of us has the power to create our own opportunities." (262). Dalton goes on and argues that people are born into a bleak social class; he or she can still break down and move up in class. Dalton's idea could happen to anyone, but the chance is very slim. It is a harsh reality that a lower class person does well in school with the ability to attend a college and even a full ride. In reality, the group that has more resources has more opportunities than the one with fewer assists. The greatest opportunity for individuals to become great is to get an education, which the government needs to be aware of.
