Although some people say shows like "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" ​​glamorize teen pregnancy, the rate of teen births has dropped even more since the television shows went off the air in 2009. The shows show the challenges and difficulties that come with getting pregnant at a young age, while still juggling high school. Between 1991 and 2008, teen pregnancies decreased by 2.5 percent per year. Between 2010 and 2014 the rate decreased by 7.5% per year and then increased. One in six 15-year-olds will give birth by their twentieth birthday. More than 750,000 teenage girls in the United States discover they are pregnant each year, this number is the lowest in U.S. history. Teenage pregnancy rates have declined more and more over the years. Since the show "16 and Pregnant" aired, between 1991 and 2008, the rate has dropped an average of about 2.5 percent per year. Between 2010 and 2014 the rate dropped 7.5% per year (Wilson 2). In 2010, the show “16 and Pregnant” was the top-rated TV show among women ages 12-34 (Harwood 3). The use of media, such as television, is a good way to convey messages to adolescents (Culp-Ressler 1). Girls watching 16 and pregnant or teen mom might see 16-year-old and pregnant girls as role models and follow in their footsteps (Debate.org 3.) Additionally, the show makes the teen parents celebrities, even after they are no longer on the show (Culp-Ressler 2.) The purpose of shows is too much to discourage young pregnancies not to make young parents celebrities (Debate.org 3.) All of this may be true but, since the shows 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom aired, the decline in teen pregnancies is decreased more than it ever has.
