The article also addresses the importance of informing expectant parents of the possibility of developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder if their newborn was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. a parent has a baby admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and is worried and stressed about his baby's health. This worry and stress can lead parents to develop PTSD. A parent is more likely to develop PTSD if they experience fear of the unknown and death, quality of life, medical interventions in the neonatal intensive care unit, and stories of other parents' experiences with l neonatal intensive care unit. . One study found that parents who have babies in the neonatal intensive care unit experience distress in social relationships, including marital ones. The article suggests that childbirth educators should prepare parents for the possibility of PTSD in prenatal classes and teach the symptoms of PTSD, so that parents can recognize if they begin to show symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder that they can get the help they need. One study found that PTSD, which develops from childbirth experiences, accounts for 1.7% to 5.6% of all PTSD cases. The field of neonatal and maternity nursing is something I am very interested in and learning about the effects of PTSD and parents with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit was something I was not aware of. If I had to choose another article it would also concern the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit because it is an interest of mine. The article I decided on allowed me to learn more about the effects that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has on parents.
