Topic > What is the role of deafness in 'El Deafo' - 1041

However, although we are not deaf, being in ASLN 201, we can identify with the book. Just as Cece is dealing with her deafness, we are dealing with learning a new language. Even though we do this by choice, Cece has no say in the matter; his deafness is out of his control. However, he can control how he behaves towards others who come into contact with his deafness. From the book it is clear that, being deaf, an individual can often be perceived as disabled. Until others have been exposed to deaf individuals and really gotten to know that person and learn about deaf culture, they will soon realize that it is not a disability at all. Deafness is a superpower. It's a superpower for all deaf people because it's what makes them unique. We would definitely recommend this book, not only is it entertaining and educational, but everyone who reads El Deafo will learn a valuable lesson about being open-minded and self-respecting. Cece turns to superheroes to overcome her difficulties. Cece was able to use superheroes to overcome her problems and is now a superhero herself. The most valuable point of the story is that everyone must have self-confidence, and regardless of what others think, you are special and unique. Overall, after reading El Deafo, we have come to appreciate deafness and deaf culture much more. It's worth it
