Research Report: Film AssignmentFilm: Kahaani (Hindi)Many people consider gender to be a natural part of our lives, having its own roles and norms followed by people within the categories gender, male and female. However, these regulations receive different views once put in place. In this report, I wanted to answer the question: In a male-dominated society, how do female gender norms influence how people perceive themselves and how others perceive them? The patterns, in answer to my question, which will guide my article, arising from the Hindi film Kahaani, were that whenever a woman displayed feminine norms, she was given negative opinions by those of the male gender, yet those feminine roles show her positivity, allowing her to understand that strength also lies in those roles. Kahaani, based in a male-dominated country, India, is about a pregnant woman, who is actually a spy, searching for her 'missing' husband but later discovers that he resembles a terrorist. Since she is pregnant, she was not considered harmful and therefore was used and discriminated against by male police officers to lead them to the terrorist, however she used her gender to her advantage. In the following research report, I will outline the relationships between the norms for a woman and how they are perceived by others, as well as the gendered one, which is the pregnant woman. This will focus on operationalizing the variables of gender roles, perceptions related to the actions, words and treatments the character receives. From these, I will explain the methods I used to obtain the patterns that answered my question after analyzing the film. With more time and more careful analysis of the film, I believe my results could have been more accurate through better methods of operationalizing the variables.
