Feasibility study of imported biscuits1. BACKGROUND There are many brands of biscuits available in the market. The market not only offers biscuits produced in Nepal but also biscuits exported from abroad. Even with the same brand, manufacturers have introduced varieties considering different flavors preferred by different people. This study particularly focuses on some of the famous biscuit brands like Britania, Parle, Priyagold etc. Which are exported from India to find out the market condition of such products and the potential market prospects for similar types of products.2. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The study was conducted with the following objectives:i. Explore the brands of biscuits available in the export market from abroad (especially India) and the product lines offered by these brands.ii. To find out the market price of various brands available in the market.iii. To find out the market share of various brands of these biscuits available in the market and their expiry date.iv. Identify the distribution channels most used by retailers and their pricing policy.3. STUDY METHODOLOGY The study is conducted through direct interview with retailers who offer different brands of exported biscuits to customers. For the purpose of the research, a sample of 50 retailers is selected. Judgmental sampling method is used. Only retailers of exported biscuits of the brands under study were taken into consideration. As per the needs of the study, a formal interview with a structured questionnaire and an informal conversation on the topic is conducted to obtain as much information as possible. Parle has the authorized importer for its product in Nepal who distributes the product to around 40 distributors who then supply the products to the stores. But the products are also imported through private individuals without any license. There are many importers involved in the business but they are not visible because they do not have any license to do so. Most distributors do not agree to disclose the source through which they obtain the products.
