This is evident in verse 1, line 7, “One day he may struggle to emerge from his tender pearl of blind skin/with a wing or with vision/ leaving the transparent behind.” In this line, Hogan used the growth of the creature as a metaphor to illustrate the development and maturation of a person. This phrase effectively conveys the message that at some point in our lives, sooner or later, we will leave the cocoon created by our parents and teachers, leaving us to survive with our own creation. This line reflects me because I have reached the end of my school career and therefore I will soon leave my cocoon. Furthermore, the poet used the verb struggle to indicate the difficulty of leaving a place where one has been for so long and adapting to the new change. Likewise, this reflects my current attitude towards life after school, because I know that leaving home and school will be challenging; However, I know that I will acquire many new skills and experiences, which will be worth a lot to me in the long run. Furthermore, the poem goes on to say, “I cover it again, continue to work / hands in the earth, myself a singular body.” This line explains to readers how the path people choose to take may not initially be the one they intended; however, if you keep looking, you will eventually find the one that is best for you. This line highlights my perspective on university and how, although I hope to study something that I currently think I would enjoy, in the future I may find that it's not for me and go on to do something that I don't see myself doing at the moment.
